Ecosan Training Course

ECOSAN-CAPACITY is a project funded by the European Commission as part of the component B "Capacity Building" of the AsiaProEco Program. The main objective of this venture is to build capacity for future implementation of ecological sanitation projects in India, thus increasing the number of ecosan experts capable of planning, designing and realizing sustainable sanitation projects in the region.

The Ecosan Training Course follows a participatory cross-institutional and interdisciplinary approach. Participants will gain thorough theoretical and practical knowledge in the field ecosan. The course consists of two one-week modules, which will enable you to plan and implement your own ecological sanitation projects.

• Introduction and background of ecological sanitation
• The ecosan concept: closing the loop by reusing water and nutrients
• Overview over various ecosan systems and technology components
• Social & institutional aspects; definition of stakeholders, planning and awareness raising
• Economic aspects and the reuse of ecosan products in agriculture
• Health aspects
• Best practice examples from India and other countries

Module 2: “Ecosan – exercises and case studies” is a cross-institutional workshop providing information on the successful design, implementation and operation of ecosan projects. The participants will learn how to design and plan a sustainable sanitation solution from the scratch. Topics include:
• Technical exercises on Urine Diversion Dehydration Toilets and UrineManagement, Biogas Sanitation and Greywater Management
• Interactive lectures on high-end technologies and various options for reuse
• Concrete planning of an own real-life ecosan case study in an extended group work with a focus on a holistic reuse concept

Ecosan E learning Programme
March 24th to 31st 2008: Ecosan E-learning Course - Capacity Building for Ecological Sanitation.
Unfortunatly, this course is full and registration is therefore no longer possible. But it is possible to register for the next course that runs from 9th to 16th June 2008.

Organisation: Ecosan Services Foundation in collaboration with Ecosan Capacity, a project funded by the Asia Pro Eco Programme of the European Union.

An internet-based introductory ecosan e-learning course has been developed for those who want to get an introduction to ecological sanitation and/or want to prepare themselves for the next ecosan face-to-face training course in Nashik, India (May 12th to May 23rd 2008 to know more click here). The e-learning course is designed for people from or working in South Asia and is conducted by some of the most reputable ecosan experts worldwide. The course can be attended by interested persons with a working internet connection for free.

The next e-learning course will be held from March 24th to March 31st 2008. (There will be 5 sessions from Mon 24 to Fri 29 & the last session will be on Mon 31st March).
Unfortunatly, this course is full and registration is therefore no longer possible. But it is possible to register for the next course that runs from 9th to 16th June 2008.

This course provides a focused overview on ecological sanitation (ecosan) as a framework for sustainable sanitation development and resource management. Based on practical experiences, ecosan toilet systems (dry toilets, source separation toilets, etc.) will be introduced, analyzed and discussed online. Specific focus will be given on applications in developing countries. The course will also discuss the role of ecosan-projects in water resource-management. Using these experiences, and supported by the course coach and international experts, the participants will work individually or in small groups on their own questions and case studies

All the necessary documents are stored online and will be accessible to all participants. The online courses will facilitate access to a discussion forum where discussions are presented in a threaded and structured fashion

Different experts from Europe and Asia will be the supervisors and will give discussion incentives in the course. The participants will discuss topics such as which technology is best suited for which situation, how to approach different stakeholders, reuse and health aspects as well as which factors need to be considered for the successful implementation of ecosan projects. Participants will also be able to initiate discussions themselves.

To attend the course, register now . To receive more information on this and other ecological sanitation courses, don’t hesitate to contact us at ecosan@ecosanservices.org or sreevidya.satish@ecosanservices.org.

Each training member who did successfully take part in the e-learning course will get an electronic course certificate from the International Ecological Engineering Society (IEES). A nominal fee to receive a laminated hard copy of the certificate along with the newest version of the ecosan curriculum CD will apply.
